WHY IS THIS INFORMATION IMPORTANT?
This page will tell you everything that you need to know about this electric vehicle. Buying a vehicle is a huge accomplishment and a large financial outlay. We want you to have as much information as possible, so that you can make the best decision for you.
The Volkswagen ID.4 and Volkswagen ID.5 are battery electric compact crossover SUVs produced by Volkswagen. Based on the Volkswagen Group electric MEB platform, it is the second model in the Volkswagen ID. series. The production version of the ID.4 debuted in September 2020 as the first fully-electric crossover SUV under the Volkswagen brand.[6] The ID.4 is positioned by Volkswagen as a high-volume, mass-market electric vehicle — a car for “the millions, not the millionaires,” as the company claimed in its advertising.[7] It was delivered to the European customers from late 2020, and the first quarter of 2021 for the North American market.[8][9] The coupé-shaped variant of the ID.4 (akin to the Audi e-tron Sportback) is known as the Volkswagen ID.5.
The ID.4 was elected World Car of the Year 2021 over runner-ups Honda e and Toyota Yaris.[10]

What the critics have to say…
After years of teasing us with electric-powered concept cars, Volkswagen is finally delivering on its promises with the ID.4 electric SUV, which started life as the ID. Crozz concept vehicle. While it doesn’t look like the famed Microbus-inspired ID. Buzz, the ID.4 is no less important to VW’s goal of rolling out a robust lineup of electric vehicles.
— Car and Driver
The 2021 ID.4 is the first U.S.-bound Volkswagen built from the ground up as an electric vehicle. Note the key “ground up” part. Volkswagen’s first U.S. market EV was the e-Golf — not much more than a Golf hatchback with an electric motor and batteries instead of a gas powertrain. VW sold it from 2015 to 2019, and while we like the way it drove, its range wasn’t very impressive. VW says the ID.4 is optimized from the get-go for the best range, efficiency and interior space possible.

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?
Eco makes the steering light and easy, a boon for city driving or maneuvering in tight places. If you balk at the lack of responsiveness in that setup, tune to Sport mode. Doing so tightens up the handling and gives the ID.4 a more athletic ride.

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?
Is the Volkswagen ID.4 Reliable?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 does not have a predicted reliability score as of this writing.
Volkswagen ID.4 Warranty
Volkswagen covers the ID.4 with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for the battery.
HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?
This is a comfortable EV. Most notably, the climate control system does a great job of keeping the cabin at a consistent temperature even in the Eco setting. There are even some fun temperature presets to choose from based on how you’re feeling. It’s also decently quiet. You’ll hear some outside and road noise when driving, but the ID.4 proved to be just as quiet in our sound measurements as other top EVs.
Edmunds
WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?
While the ID.4’s interior looks less flashy than the ID. Crozz Concept’s cabin, which featured a retractable steering wheel and sliding rear doors, it still offers a contemporary design with high-tech features, ambient lighting, and generous cargo space. The interior design is uncluttered and playful, particularly the 1st Edition model, which comes with accelerator and brake pedals with cheeky play and pause symbols. Cloth seats are standard but adding the optional Statement package adds faux-leather upholstery along with 12-way power adjustable front seats with massage and memory functionality.

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?
There is a lot of great technology packed into the ID.4. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard (you can still plug in if you prefer), and there are plenty of USB-C ports to go around. There’s also a spot reserved for wireless phone charging. If you’re not into using smartphone integration for navigating, the onboard navigation system is quite good and easy to use. The sound system won’t blow you away, but that’s about the only downside here.
Edmunds
WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?
This is one of the more versatile EVs around. It offers a substantial 30.3 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seat. The rear seats are split 60/40 and fold forward flat for 64.2 cubic feet of space. This is more than what you’ll get from something like a Hyundai Kona Electric but not as much as what the Model Y offers. If you don’t need that flat area, you can drop the rear cargo floor down a level for slightly more space. Small underfloor storage is a great place for the mobile EVSE (charger).
Edmunds
IS THIS VEHICLE A GOOD VALUE?
The ID.4’s appeal comes from its combination of a roomy size, reasonable price and helpful real-world range. Interior build quality is a bit hit-and-miss — some of the high touch-point areas are made out of hard, cheap-feeling plastic — but for what you’re paying, the ID.4 is well equipped.
Edmunds
IS THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 A GOOD SUV?
Yes, the Volkswagen ID.4 is a good electric SUV. You get up to 250 miles of range, and while that’s dwarfed by what a Tesla delivers, it’s still enough to make this EV fairly easy to live with. The ID.4 accelerates with confidence, and its handling manners range from breezy and comfortable to slightly sporty.
USNews
SHOULD I BUY THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.4?
The Volkswagen ID.4 is a good choice if you want to go fully electric, need lots of space, and don’t mind performance that has more in common with a traditional gasoline engine than the smooth, powerful feel of an EV. If you have room in your budget and prioritize performance with an added shot of cool, you may find a rival like the Ford Mustang Mach-E a better choice. And to wipe out range anxiety as much as possible, it’s hard to beat a Tesla such as the Model Y.

THE FINAL WORD
If you are in the market for an electric vehicle then the Volkswagen ID.4 is worth having a look at. It checks most of the important boxes, is a decent value and has shown improvements in only one year.
