Mercedes EQB

The Mercedes-Benz EQB is a seven-seat battery electriccompact luxurycrossover SUV produced by the German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz from 2021.[2]

The EQB is part of the EQ family, a range that will expand to include 10 new models by 2022.[2] The Mercedes-Benz EQB is based on the Mercedes-Benz GLB. The EQB is available in both all-wheel and front-wheel drive configurations. The Mercedes EQB will be available in five and seven seat layouts. The Mercedes-Benz EQBs for the Chinese market will be manufactured at the Beijing Benz plant in China. Mercedes Benz-EQBs sold outside of China will be manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz Kecskemet plant in Hungary, unlike the non-Chinese market fossil-fuel powered GLBs, which are manufactured at Daimler AG-Nissan joint venture COMPAS plant in Mexico.[3] The Mercedes-Benz EQB will go on sale in 2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle in China and Europe. Sales of EQB will begin in 2022 as a 2023 model year vehicle in other markets outside of China and Europe.[4][5]

What the critics have to say…

Mercedes’ EQ line of electric vehicles continues its rapid expansion with the new EQB small SUV, which the company pulled the wraps off of at the Shanghai Auto Show. While the EQB revealed in Shanghai is built in China for the Chinese market, a global variant of the electric SUV will also be produced at Benz’s plant in Kecskemét, Hungary.

MotorTrend

HOW DOES IT DRIVE?

Handling is best described as safe and secure rather than particularly fun or engaging – although that has as much to do with the EQB’s shape and stature, as it does the steering or suspension. It feels perfectly predictable, however, and the plentiful torque is sufficient to put a smile on your face.

Auto Express

IS IT RELIABLE AND HIGH QUALITY?

Not enough data at this time.

HOW COMFORTABLE IS IT?

On the road, the EQB is refined and its electric drivetrain works well, allowing for a smooth and relaxing driving experience – although wind noise is quite pronounced when you’re cruising along. This is less of an issue in the more expensive EQC, partly thanks to its sleeker shape, but also because of double-glazed side windows and extra sound deadening.

WHAT IS THE INTERIOR LIKE?

The EQB offers the same seating layout as the seven-seat GLB, but there is a compromise in that the floor has been raised to accommodate the battery. This means that the driver’s seat doesn’t drop quite as low as it does in the GLB, although you do get electric adjustment as standard, including for lumbar, and most people will be able to find a comfortable driving position.

That higher floor also means that there’s less foot room beneath the front seats for those sitting in the second row. Meanwhile, Mercedes itself describes the third-row seats as comfortable for anyone up to 5ft 4in tall.

What Car

WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY LIKE?

Mercedes-Benz’s newest MBUX infotainment system is on display inside the EQB. It offers touchscreen, voice command, and steering-wheel controls for its audio, navigation, and other functions. We’ve found this new interface to be frustrating to use at times, particularly its overly enthusiastic voice assistant that pops up any time you say the word Mercedes. The navigation offers a feature to help drivers more easily find EV charging stations.

Car and Driver

WHAT IS THE CARGO SPACE LIKE?

With five seats in place, the EQB offers a generous 465-litre boot. This is one of the main reasons to choose the EQB over the EQA, which only has a 340-litre boot that’s beaten by some superminis. Fold the second and third rows and you’ll have 1,710 litres to play with – that’s up there with what big estate cars offer. All three seats in the second row fold individually.

THE FINAL WORD

The EQB is an attractive choice for families looking to go electric. With its spacious interior and loads of driver safety features, it’s equipped with the brains and brawn to handle anything an active household might throw at it. Mercedes’ advanced driving aids will further entice technophiles and should keep rivals Tesla and Audi on their toes. Be sure to check back with us here at Edmunds for more news, updates and driving impressions as we near the EQB’s release date. — Edmunds
